Need help with a stamped cross stitch blanket?

I have always worked the counted cross stitch but now my aunt needs help with a stamped cross stitch baby blanket. She tried but her eyes aren’t so good any more & she really messed it up. The problem I’m having is she has lost all the papers. Do I stitch all the way through both layers & have the thread showing on the backside of the blanket or do I just stitch through the top layer??
