Most people find cross stitching straight forward to do, but you do generally need a few tips to help you get started with the right techniques. Here is an explanation of the main terms and cross stitch techniques.

Cross stitch kit

A kit is a pack that contains all the material you need to make the illustrated design. It usually contains Aida or Evenweave fabric, stranded cotton thread in all the required colours, a needle and a cross stitch pattern or chart with instructions on how to complete the design.

A chart is a diagrammatic description of how to complete your design. Codes (such as #, +,

Many online cross stitch stores offer freebies to download and print from your computer. This is great way to try a product and gain trust on online cross stitch shops.
___________________________________________________________________
Online stores offer free cross stitch patterns usually on a pdf format, otherwise known as Adobe Acrobat Reader. To download a freebie, you will need to click on a link provided and then save in your documents. It is a good idea to first read any instructions provided on how to download the freebies.

If the free cross stitch pattern was made in adobe acrobat reader, then you will need to have this program in your computer to open the pattern. Here is the difficult part. Acrobat reader has many versions. If the pattern was made on the latest version of acrobat reader (version 8) and you have an older version in your computer, the file will not open. Actually, you may get an error message or a blank page.

This does not mean that the cross stitch store has given you an invalid link to download a freebie, it has simply to do with the fact that you need to update your adobe acrobat reader in your computer! To check which version of adobe acrobat reader you have, locate this program in your computer and open it. Then go to menu Acrobat and click on “about acrobat”. It will open a window saying which version you have in your computer. Acrobat reader is a free program and can be easily installed in your computer. Once installed the new version will overwrite the old version so you do not need to do anything further.

When you managed to open the free cross stitch pattern and saved it in your documents, you will now need to print it so you can start stitching! Cross stitch patterns must be printed in the highest quality, in order for the grid and symbols to be accurately visible and clean. Make sure you have a nice quality A4 paper and check that you are not running out of ink. According to the file format, you may need to select the appropriate size from your printer menu - page set up. If the cross stitch pattern is missing some grids from the top or the bottom of the page (or even from the sides), you will need to go to the printer menu and select a borderless printing.

Every online shop which offers free cross stitch patterns to download, has created the patterns carefully with full instructions. If instructions are missing and you are not sure how to download a freebie, contact the shop owner and ask for advice.

And something else you should not forget! Even the free cross stitch patterns are copyrighted and should be used only for your personal use.

I hope this guide has been useful. Happy stitching!

I saw a cross stitch wall hanging of Jesus done in white thread on black cloth. The cool thing about it was that it was just the highlighted parts that were stitched in–like just where the light would hit. I actually looked at it several times before I figured out what it was. Does anyone understand what I mean? There is probably a term for this kind of picture, but until I figure it out, I’m not having much luck finding anything similar. Any help would be much appreciated!
So far I’ve received 3 answers, and I gotta say, the first responder was right on target with that first image. That’s really close to what I’m wanting, but if anybody knows where or how I can convert this to cross stitch, I’d love some advice. I’ve never tried to get a pattern online before. The second person who answered had some really cool links, too, but I don’t think I’m talented enough to use those pictures, although I did save the links, just because I think they’re awesome! The third answerer, well, I guess he/she just didn’t get it.

You can use either Aida cloth or line for Celtic cross stitch, but Aida is the preferred fabric because the holes are already in the fabric for you. It is also bets for beginners and for those who may have poor eyesight. It is available in 8, 11, 14, 16 and 18 blocks per 2.5 cm. The fabric count will tell you how many blocks there are in a standard square of Aida cloth. This fabric also comes in many different colors and you can also dye it to your preferred color. Linen has very few holes counts, which is why it is a difficult fabric for beginners to use. However, there are irregularities in linen, which gives the finished product a more unique look.

The basic stitches you need to learn for this cross stitch design are:

* X. The X stitch is the basic stitch in any cross stitch pattern. To make this stitch you first have to make a small knot in the end of the thread. Bring the needle up through one of the holes from the wrong side of the fabric so that you now have the needle on the right side. Insert the needle in the hole in the diagonal corner of the square and then bring it back up through the opposite hole. When you once again pass the needle through the corresponding diagonal hole, you have an X pattern over the square.

* /. This is the half-sticth pattern and represents one half of the basic X stitch. You simply bring the needle up through a hole and then pass it down through the hole in the diagonal corner.

* The Quarter stitch pattern is one half of the half stitch. When you bring your needle up through the hole, put it down through the fabric halfway between the hole and the one in the diagonal corner.

* A three-quarter stitch is a combination of both the half and quarter stitch designs. First you make a half stitch and then you proceed as if you were going to make a full X. Instead of making the second half of the stitch you put the needle through the middle of the half stitch.

Once you know how to make these stitches, you can create your own Celtic designs that you can use for cross stitch. You do need to have graph paper for such a project. Using a felt tip open make prominent dots in the corners of the squares on the graph paper. Highlight every second dot with a pen. Once you trace out your design in this way for the length of the sheet of paper, then you can start doing the same thing horizontally.

Use one section of the graph paper where you have five regular dots and four highlighted dots. Make sure you measure so that your square is even. Each highlighted dot will be the place where the threads intersect, so you can place a small X over these dots. Continue marking these dots with an X all the way to the border but do not mark those that lie on the line of the border. When you have all the highlighted dots crisscrossed, you can join the knot lines along the sides. You will see how they bow out towards each other. Make a double line to connect them to make your circle.
